France’s nothern coast: the forgotten road trip destination?

The North Coast of France—spanning Normandy and Brittany—makes an unforgettable road trip route, especially for classic and sports car enthusiasts. With smooth, sweeping coastal roads, dramatic tides, charming harbours, and historic towns, it’s tailor-made for spirited driving and scenic pauses. Normandy has often struck me as overlooked. Many of us breeze through Normandy in search of great sights further south, but I urge you to take another look. The weather is a little more ‘British’ than the Cote d’Azur but don’t let that put you off! There are some amazing places here.

Why it’s perfect for classic & sports cars

  • Curving coastal roads with beautiful surfaces
    • Routes like the D201 from Saint‑Malo toward Mont Saint‑Michel offer varied elevations, sharp curves, and open vistas—ideal for an engaging drive.  Stick to the beach roads for nice shots with sand blowing across the road.
  • Spectacular sea views and fresh air
    • The North Atlantic breezes and high tides in the Mont‑Saint‑Michel Bay region, along with dramatic cliffs and long beaches, enrich every mile with visual drama
  • Elegant towns and polished stops
    • Honfleur’s timber‑framed houses and sheltered harbour entice visitors for leisurely strolls around the Retour Bassin, while winding streets and medieval architecture in St‑Malо invite plenty of photo ops. Both are great places to go.
  • Historic landmarks and gourmet breaks
    • Whether pulling up near the ramparts of St‑Malo, sampling Cancale oysters overlooking the bay, or winding through Dinan and Dol‑de‑Bretagne, the region offers excellent stops to stretch legs and enjoy local delicacies

Honfleur

Begin in Honfleur, the quintessential artist’s port on the Seine estuary. A morning drive along scenic coastal roads leads you into its charming harbour, lined with timber‑frame houses dating back centuries. Parking a classic car here evokes idyllic nostalgia, while cobbled lanes and boutique cafés invite a relaxed stroll. Have a relaxed coffee and croissant whilst overlooking the fishing boats.

St Malo

Continue west into Brittany’s pirate‑founded jewel: St‑Malo. Intra‑Muros, the walled old town perched above golden-sand beaches like the Plage du Sillon, offers a stunning backdrop for photo stops. From the ramparts you’ll enjoy sweeping ocean views—ideal when cruising a convertible or vintage roadster. If you don´t fancy entering France via the Eurotunnel at Calais, the overnight ferry to St Malo is a very good (albeit slower) alternative.

Mont‑Saint‑Michel

Make your way down the coast via the picturesque Pointe du Grouin, with dramatic glimpses of Mont‑Saint‑Michel framed across the bay. The Abbey island itself—surrounded by Europe’s highest tides—is a bucket‑list finale. The causeway roads leading to it offer a cinematic setting at high or low tide. Check before you travel to get your tide timings correct!

Other scenic stops

Between Honfleur and Mont‑Saint‑Michel lies classic Normandy countryside, dotted with detours to Bayeux (home of the famous tapestry and rich D‑Day history), or Caen’s war memorial museum. Historic villages like Beuvron‑en‑Auge add pastoral turns to your coastal route.

Why classic and sports car aficionados should love it

  • Car care & style: The mix of smooth departmental roads and coastal secondary roads provides ideal conditions to enjoy a well‑tuned engine—without heavy traffic or motorway grayness.
  • Photo-ready scenery: Pull over at overlooks like Pointe du Grouin or the sweeping dunes near Cancale for memorable galleries of seaside views and car shots.
  • Comfort and hospitality: Charming boutique hotels in Honfleur and guesthouses near Saint‑Malo offer parking and great food—fresh seafood, cider, and local crepes—perfect for winding down after a day behind the wheel
  • Flexible itinerary: The distance between stops is manageable—Honfleur to St‑Malo about 2h30 driving time, and St‑Malo to Mont‑Saint‑Michel under 2h along scenic roads—leaving plenty of opportunity for side detours or exploration on foot
